Scotch Tape and Vision Therapy – A Post-Concussion Success Story

At Advanced Eyecare & Therapies, we’re always on the lookout for innovative solutions to complex visual issues, especially for our patients recovering from concussions. One of our latest success stories highlights the incredible potential of a simple yet effective tool: Scotch Tape. Yes, you read that right—ordinary Scotch Tape, when used strategically, can work wonders for improving vision and overall functionality after a concussion.

How the Scotch Tape Story Started

This case involved a 19-year-old patient with a history of two concussions—one in 2022 from a waterskiing accident and another in 2024 from a chair-lifting injury. Following the second concussion she experienced several persistent symptoms including:

  • Light sensitivity
  • Occasional double vision
  • Problems with balance
  • Headaches
  • Visual fatigue
  • Difficulties navigating spaces

During her evaluation, we discovered she had a mild nearsighted and astigmatism prescription but could only achieve 20/30 vision at distance and 20/40 at near. One thing that stood out to us was the fact that activating proprioception (stimulating her finger joints) temporarily improved her vision to 20/20, suggesting that sensory integration played a role in her visual deficits.

The Role of Scotch Tape

After determining that small amounts of vertical prism didn’t improve her symptoms (and actually worsened her dizziness), our team evaluated her near point peripheral vision. It was clearly constricted, a common after-effect in concussion patients caused by a prolonged “fight or flight” nervous system response.

Enter the Scotch Tape solution. By applying small bi-nasal strips of tape—just 1/8-inch wide—on the inner corners of her glasses lenses, we subtly reduced the visual information each hemisphere of her brain processed. The results were immediate and remarkable:

  • Improved Clarity: The patient reported clearer vision and reduced head discomfort.
  • Better Balance: Her physical stability improved significantly.
  • Enhanced Awareness: She noticed more details in her environment, like the decor around the office.
  • Expanded Peripheral Vision: Her near point peripheral vision improved by 300%!

A Simple Start to Comprehensive Therapy

Once the Scotch Tape solution proved to be a success, we reintroduced vertical prisms, and this time, they resulted in further improvements in reading speed, accuracy, and visual processing. This case speaks to the importance of personalized, innovative care and highlights how traditional methods don’t work for everyone.

At Advanced Eyecare & Therapies, our innovative approach combines simple tools and advanced techniques to deliver life-changing results. Whether you’re managing a concussion or other visual challenges, we’re here to help.
